About Us

East Mountain Studio is a private lesson and recording studio founded in 2019 in the Hudson Valley town of Cold Spring, NY and operated by Kathryn and Stephen Selman.

We provide mentorship and creative space for students of all ages to explore music and self expression.

Our mission is to enable our students to make music a lifelong source of joy.

Kathryn Selman - Co-Founder, Instructor

Kathryn is a music teacher, performer and songwriter with over 12 years of teaching experience.

She holds her masters degree in Jazz Performance from the University of North Texas. Kathryn also studied abroad in Spain, and loves to sing in both Spanish and Portuguese. You can listen to her album here. Kathryn was also a top 5 finalist in the 2014 Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition! You can find her beginner ukulele tutorials for adults on YouTube with her project, Ukulele Wine Time. And she and Stephen just launched a YouTube channel for kids to learn ukulele as well! It's called Ukulele Kat.

Stephen Selman - Co-founder, Instructor

Stephen is a teacher, musician and studio engineer with over 15 years of teaching experience as a private and group instructor. He specializes in guitar, bass, piano, drums, ukulele and songwriting/production.

He holds a degree in Songwriting and Guitar Performance from Berklee College of Music.

Matt Gaydar - Guest Instructor

We are thrilled to introduce the newest member of our team!

Matt is singer-songwriter, guitarist, and recording artist with over 20 years of musical experience. Previously an after-school cooking teacher and gardener, he is now sharing his musical knowledge with the next generation. He teaches guitar, bass, ukulele, piano and songwriting.

He holds a degree in Music Composition from Skidmore College.
